Building a place where families will have many resources accessible.

Current Situation

Every day we often hear of how much our families within the community are reaching their goals in obtaining a good home for their family.  Many families in urban communities do not know where to go or where to start looking for help.  Some families or individuals go for help for their issues and are sent in different directions which will frustrate them to the point that they stop looking for help they badly need. The target populations are low-income families with children and single individuals trying to make it in the East Harlem community. Most parents in New York City don’t really understand the school system and where to go for help. Parents are given the run around when finding answers to questions they may have, due to lack of help.

Empower Parents

Helping families to help their children in growing up, better in school and in life in general. When parents go for help in the Dept of Education for their children they get into what we call, “The Whirlpool” which means, go there and here and still are left with no solution. Families will provide all the necessary assistance to families in need, for instance:  parent classrooms, to better understand what their children are learning in schools today and help them at home.

Lastly, the organization will give the community a number of outlets that will help overall low-income families and individuals, a one-stop environment for all their life skills assistance.

The organization would take a number of approaches towards making sure that every client that walks through the doors of Sonia’s Empowering Families Foundation completes a thorough assessment, to make sure that their needs are approached in the right resolution. The organization will have the right case manager, with the expertise to each area of the client concerns.

Clients will get the best attention when entering the organization. Clients will enter a safe environment with available daycare (When established), for the reason that some parents do not have anyone to take care of the infants or small children. Clients will be able to have a case manager accompany to their appointments, i.e. doctors, school, court, and housing. When families are provided with the proper assistance, it leads them in the direction of a good home environment. When children live in a home with the surroundings of the everyday needs, they tend to do better in school, good health and a much positive attitude.

The organization staff will have a well-rounded sense of teamwork knowledge, and a significant amount of training. At the start, there will be at least a ten caseload for every case manager. Keeping caseloads of ten per case manager can assist each client with more options to their concerns. Creation of a well-established intake and assessment forms, forms that would express every angle of the client’s background and difficulties. Well-rounded forms are excellent finding what the problem at hand is really good for the organization.
